Not everyone likes the new look of Valve’s digital platform’s user interface because it has a slightly mobile feel to it.
The public may have overreacted to Steam’s constant minor changes. This time, however, the change was significant, as Gabe Newell‘s company released the updated storefront, which had previously only been available to beta testers. If you haven’t logged into Steam in the last few days and are now updating it, that’s why.
The new interface makes the home page much more attractive and wider. Valve combined the two components of the old interface — the list of major categories on the left and the blue bar at the top — into a single, easy-to-navigate bar. As part of the consolidation, the Categories section now displays the actual categories. Previously, when the Categories section was still on the sidebar, Steam’s categories were things like Top Sellers and New Releases.

Hovering over the new Categories display reveals more useful game genres, allowing you to easily browse between racing, stealth, and other genres. Additionally, the categories that appear are personalized, which is either very convenient or another example of surveillance capitalism. We can decide which we prefer.
Some of us may be put off by how mobile-friendly the new layout is. We wouldn’t be alone in this; reactions on Reddit are mixed. Some say that Valve treats them like a grandmother using Steam on an old Samsung touchscreen tablet. Others believe that this is yet another website update that worsens the PC user experience in favor of mobile devices, with larger icons, less information, and more clicks required to navigate the menus. Still, others consider it much better and find the categories tab understandable.
