The Game That Made Even The Toughest Gamers Cry – Rockstar Legend Reveals His Greatest Masterpiece

Released in 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2 didn’t just conquer players’ hearts – it captured its creator’s as well. According to Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser, the Wild West epic is the greatest open-world game ever made, a storytelling triumph that brought even the toughest fans to tears. And while GTA IV and GTA V stand proudly in the lineup, this cowboy saga holds a special place in his career.

Since its release in 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2 has not only been a commercial and critical hit but also holds a deeply personal significance for one of its key creators. Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has openly admitted that he considers the open world of the 2018 title his greatest professional achievement, ranking it even higher than the iconic Grand Theft Auto V, thanks to its narrative cohesion and thematic depth.

Speaking during a Q&A session at LA Comic Con, Houser said: “It’s the best open world – a perfect example of storytelling and thematic coherence, and a demonstration of how games can take players on an emotional journey.” His words reveal the profound bond he feels with the project, one that goes far beyond commercial metrics.

Originally launched on consoles in 2018 and later on PC in 2019, the game still boasts a thriving player base and an “Extremely Positive” rating on Steam, cementing its reputation as one of Rockstar’s most beloved titles. Houser is far from the only one praising it: its vast open world, gripping story, memorable characters, and powerful soundtrack combine to create a benchmark experience within the genre.

Although Red Dead Redemption 2 stands out as his proudest work, Houser also mentioned other Rockstar milestones that defined his career. GTA IV, for example, impressed him with its narrative evolution, while GTA V remains remarkable for its three interchangeable protagonists and parallel storylines, which he called “truly amazing.” He also gave special mention to the original Red Dead Redemption’s ending, which players still regard as one of gaming’s most unforgettable moments.

What Comes Next?

With attention now shifting toward Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar’s next major project, Houser’s remarks reaffirm the lasting legacy of Red Dead Redemption 2. One thing is clear: after Arthur Morgan’s emotional journey, fans are hoping future installments will deliver the same narrative weight and emotional depth — and many are quietly wishing for a potential Red Dead Redemption 3 to continue the saga of the Wild West.
