This ambitious game has everything needed to dominate the genre: striking visuals, an intricate mix of action and strategy, and the freedom to seize the throne itself. In Chronicles Medieval, you write your own legend — all the way to kingship if you dare.
Picture yourself in an action RPG where bloody medieval battles rage, where you recruit and arm your own troops, and where your decisions can make you a king — or the most feared outlaw of the 15th century. That’s the experience Chronicles Medieval sets out to deliver. Announced at Summer Game Fest, this sandbox for PC and consoles has already generated massive buzz. With stunning visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5 and a reactive narrative reminiscent of Crusader Kings 3, the project shows enormous promise. And while you probably won’t be devouring popes in the Vatican, early discussions with the devs suggest plenty of bold storytelling.
Fans of Mount & Blade will feel right at home — the premise is similar, but the ambition goes far beyond. Raw Power Games, a team of over 100 industry veterans behind hits like The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Assassin’s Creed, and Red Dead Redemption 2, aims to create a deeper, more dynamic take on medieval life. “Chronicles Medieval is about giving players total control and a deeply personal way to experience the Middle Ages,” says lead designer Andrzej Zawadzki.
A Sandbox Where Anything Is Possible
Set in 14th and 15th-century Europe, Chronicles Medieval isn’t a typical open-world RPG. Instead, it features a vast, strategy-style map where you navigate between events, missions, and battles. Villages and castles evolve dynamically, reacting to your actions and shaping the world around you.
There’s no scripted story — you create your own destiny. At the start, you’ll choose a historical era like the Hundred Years’ War, but your choices define the experience: outlaw, knight, healer, or ruler. The developers are avoiding procedural quests in favor of handcrafted stories: “We want every mission, large or small, to feel meaningful and connected to the world.”
Combat is action-oriented yet grounded, thanks to input from medieval combat specialist Björn Rüther. Expect brutal executions, detailed weapon handling, and authentic battlefield chaos. Massive battles — hundreds of soldiers fighting at once — will recreate the “heat of battle”, thanks to Unreal Engine 5 and the studio’s Asgard Engine. And yes, co-op multiplayer is confirmed.
Strategy, Warfare, and Storytelling Collide
The strategy layer lets you recruit, train, and customize troops before commanding them in large-scale battles, much like Total War. Orders are realistic: “If you send your cavalry to flank, you can’t call them back.” says Zawadzki. Your influence is limited to those within range, emphasizing realism.
Your character will evolve with new abilities and decisions shaping their legacy. You can become a wandering knight or lead an empire — even ascend the throne. “Yes, you’ll be able to rule your own kingdom.” confirms the team. Governance plays a role but doesn’t overshadow the character-driven story.
Chronicles Medieval could become one of the most ambitious sandbox RPGs of its generation. With Tom Hardy narrating the cinematic trailer and mod support available from day one, the team is aiming high. Early access is set for early 2026, with console versions to follow. Co-op will initially focus on battles, with full campaign support planned down the line.
