We finally know Jin Sakai’s fate after the events of Tsushima — but only through a hidden mission in Ghost of Yotei that many players might miss. The new adventure stars Atsu, the “Ghost of Yotei,” yet its story is deeply connected to its predecessor.
The long-awaited Ghost of Yotei is out now, and despite what many expected, Sucker Punch’s latest open-world epic surprised fans in two major ways: Jin Sakai is no longer the protagonist, and the story takes place 300 years after he defended Tsushima’s shores from the Mongol invasion. While the first game and its DLC gave closure to Jin’s journey, many players were still left wondering what became of the former samurai. The answer is now revealed in one of Yotei’s side missions.
Across Yotei’s expansive world, players will encounter numerous side quests that either deepen the main story or delve into the lives of Hokkaido’s inhabitants. However, as GamesRadar highlights, there’s a “hidden” mission titled The Storm Blade, which can be easily missed unless you meet Ugetsu, a wandering Japanese troubadour. This mission explores Jin Sakai’s mysterious past.
How Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei Are Connected (Spoilers Ahead)
During the mission, players investigate the belongings of a deceased warrior, among which are several items clearly linked to Jin Sakai — including his horse and keepsakes believed to have belonged to the Phantom himself. At the end of the quest, a cinematic reveals Jin’s fate: he became the world’s first shinobi (a term we now associate with the ninjas or mercenaries of the Sengoku era, though Jin lived long before), fleeing from the shogun and sailing to Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), where he established himself as an assassin and eventually died in the Mount Yotei region.
Even though three centuries separate the events of the two games, this revelation firmly connects Ghost of Tsushima to Ghost of Yotei, especially since they unfold in different regions of the Japanese archipelago. Still, many mysteries remain: what did Jin do during his years in Ezo? How exactly did he die? And who buried him, as his grave is perfectly preserved and marked with the Sakai Clan’s twin-mountain emblem?
Someone must have known Jin personally or shared a deep bond with him, enough for him to recount his life in detail. While this piece of fan service doesn’t answer every lingering question, Ghost of Yotei rewards players with Jin Sakai’s mask, armor, and sword — ensuring that anyone who completes this quest will walk away satisfied.
