Netflix’s Monster Finale Connects to Mindhunter in a Shocking Twist

MOVIE NEWS – Netflix stunned fans with the finale of Monster: The Ed Gein Story, which unexpectedly tied into Mindhunter. The connection between these two acclaimed true-crime series, both inspired by real cases, took viewers completely by surprise. While one show explored the roots of FBI profiling, the other dived deep into one of America’s most disturbing killers — and now, the two worlds have collided in an unforgettable crossover.

Mindhunter focused on FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench as they pioneered criminal profiling in the 1970s. Based on the real-life work of John E. Douglas and Robert Ressler, it chronicled interviews with notorious murderers like Edmund Kemper and BTK. Meanwhile, Monster: The Ed Gein Story — starring Charlie Hunnam as the infamous Wisconsin grave robber — depicted the life of the man whose crimes inspired countless horror classics. Despite the very different tones of the two series, their shared obsession with the psychology of evil made this crossover feel strangely natural.

The Crossover That Took Everyone by Surprise

In Monster’s finale, Gein receives an unexpected visit from two FBI agents investigating Ted Bundy — revealed to be Douglas and Ressler, the same men who inspired Mindhunter’s protagonists. Though purely fictional, the moment felt like a tribute to Netflix’s canceled masterpiece. Fans flooded social media, celebrating what felt like a small resurrection of Mindhunter.

Co-creator Ian Brennan explained the creative choice: “We wanted to underline Gein’s lasting influence — through films like Silence of the Lambs, he also indirectly shaped Mindhunter. Ending with that nod felt like the perfect bridge between the two worlds.”

Will Mindhunter Ever Return?

Despite its devoted fanbase, Mindhunter was canceled after two seasons in 2019 due to its high production costs. Director David Fincher later admitted, “It’s an expensive show, and Netflix didn’t see a big enough audience to justify the cost.” Still, the Monster crossover has reignited fans’ hopes that the profiler duo could return someday — even if only in another Netflix series.

Charlize Theron, one of the show’s executive producers, has expressed interest in continuing the story, but Fincher is currently occupied with directing The Adventures of Cliff Booth, the sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. For now, viewers can revisit both Mindhunter and Monster: The Ed Gein Story on Netflix — and dream of what might still come.
