MOVIE NEWS – Six years have passed since the end of Game of Thrones, yet the show’s stars still can’t escape questions about its infamous finale. Maybe in another decade we’ll stop talking about it — but until then, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has shared his thoughts once more.
Let’s ask it again: did the Game of Thrones finale make you angry? Not just disappointed — angry at the writers who created one of HBO’s biggest hits. More than six years later, that question still lingers, and the cast keeps getting asked about the uproar. The latest to revisit the controversy is Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, the man who brought Jaime Lannister to life.
The Danish actor, currently starring in the HBO Max miniseries The King & Conqueror — a must-watch if you love medieval power struggles — spoke to The Independent about how he viewed the divisive ending. He wasn’t surprised at all. “It was to be expected. (…) How can you make an ending that satisfies everyone? That’s nearly impossible. I totally understand people having their opinions, but at the end of the day, it’s just a TV show. Someone told you a story and you didn’t like the ending — it’s frustrating, but that’s life.” he said, with a shrug.
The Independent points out that over 1.8 million people signed a petition demanding a reshoot of the eighth season. HBO, of course, never entertained the idea — it would have been absurd and disrespectful to the people involved. Still, those final episodes undeniably tarnished an otherwise legendary series in the eyes of many fans.
The Ending Didn’t Kill Game of Thrones
Despite the backlash, HBO Max continues to expand the world of Westeros. On one hand, there’s House of the Dragon, which remains a hit despite criticism from George R. R. Martin himself. On the other, the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms promises a lighter, more adventurous tone, as hinted in its new trailer released this week.
