Square Enix director Naoki Hamaguchi says the finale of the remake trilogy will satisfy not only new players but also long-time fans of the original Final Fantasy VII.
At the recent Brasil Game Show, Naoki Hamaguchi, director at Square Enix, discussed the upcoming third and as-yet-untitled part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. He explained that the decision to split the beloved RPG into three installments came from a desire to tell the story properly using modern technology, something impossible to achieve in a single title. Hamaguchi expressed confidence that the conclusion will resonate with both newcomers and veterans of the series.
“Final Fantasy VII has a massive fan base. We could have made it one game by cutting certain parts, but fans of the original would never have forgiven us. If we want to retell this story with modern technology, it can’t be done in one title. That’s why we made the difficult decision to divide it into three parts. I already have a clear idea of how Part 3 will end, and I believe that both old and new fans will love it. I’m confident this new game will be loved by everyone.”
Almost a year ago, Hamaguchi hinted that the third part would feature a twist to differentiate it from the first two entries. While that twist remains a mystery, Tetsuya Nomura—the other director on the project—recently confirmed that development is proceeding smoothly, as is the case with his other title, Kingdom Hearts IV.
Given the four-year gap between Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, fans may have to wait another two or three years before the trilogy’s final act arrives. In the meantime, the previous games are coming to Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch 2.
