TECH NEWS – Although Apple’s slim smartphone sold out quickly in Asia, it does not appear to have generated excessive interest.
The iPhone Air’s launch in China was a huge success, with online and offline stores selling out quickly. Unfortunately, success in one country does not guarantee the same reception in other areas. Consequently, a research firm reduced its production forecast for the iPhone Air by 1 million units by the end of 2025. Mizuho Securities, a Japanese investment banking and securities trading company, released data showing that analysts were forced to lower their 2025 production forecast due to weak iPhone Air sales.
Apple’s previous annual iPhone shipment forecast of 246 million units has been reduced by 7% to 229 million units for 2026. Mizuho Securities reports that all iPhone 17 models except the iPhone Air are selling well. Shipments of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are slightly higher than during the same period last year, and the base-model iPhone 17 is performing extremely well. Production forecasts for the non-Pro version have increased by 2 million units. Meanwhile, production forecasts for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max have increased by 1 million and 4 million units, respectively. However, the production forecast for the iPhone Air has decreased by 1 million units. Total annual production has increased from 88 million to 94 million units.
Apple currently has an advantage over its competitors because its flagship device is hugely popular in China, the world’s largest smartphone market. While Samsung canceled the Galaxy S26 Edge due to issues with the S25 Edge, Apple continues to forge ahead with the iPhone Air.
It’s unclear whether this popularity will continue in the coming weeks. However, if demand begins to slow, Apple will only have to ask its suppliers to increase production of the remaining three models.
