MOVIE NEWS – Focus Features is supporting Bugonia with viral marketing on two fronts.
Focus Features is supporting Bugonia with viral marketing on two fronts. Residents of New York and Los Angeles recently woke to billboards featuring Emma Stone, the star of Bugonia, as Michelle Fuller—the (fictional) CEO of the (fictional) company Auxolith—promising to “Heal today and tomorrow.” By the next day, activists from the (fictional) Human Resistance had tagged the posters with graffiti accusing Fuller of being “Andromedan scum,” urging everyone to resist.
All of this initially serves to unsettle—or at least to grab attention—and that’s the point. The flyposting immediately makes sense if you know the plot of Yorgos Lanthimos’s new movie. Bugonia tells the story of two unhinged cousins (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis) who kidnap the head of a biotech conglomerate (Stone), because they believe she is an alien from the Andromeda Nebula planning to enslave humanity.
The campaign’s other prong explains more: on the website https://www.humanresistancehq.com/ the Human Resistance “exposes” the conspiracy of aliens from the Andromeda Nebula and presents Fuller (Stone) in classic conspiracy-theory fashion, parading a trove of supposed secret evidence.
In cinemas, Bugonia may answer whether Stone is truly an extraterrestrial, while Lanthimos also asks whether common sense has moved so far out of our world that its return is unlikely anytime soon. The film was nominated for the Golden Lion in Venice, and bookmakers list Lanthimos, Stone, and Plemons among this year’s Oscar contenders.
