Square Enix hasn’t ruled out going big beyond the third entry of Final Fantasy VII Remake: director Naoki Hamaguchi says the team is “actively considering” either an expansion or a full-blown new title.
Square Enix is already stoking hype for Final Fantasy VII Remake’s third chapter with tidbits on gameplay tuning and overall balance, while also taking a hard look at what comes next. Even though Cloud’s next major adventure still lacks an official name and date, the developers are weighing how to extend the journey — via DLC or even a brand-new game.
That’s the gist of Naoki Hamaguchi’s interview with wccftech, which spans the trilogy’s accessibility features and even the perks of the Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card format. Asked about potential DLC for Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, Hamaguchi admitted there “were some ideas” and that the team had a plan for an expansion. But after reprioritizing, Square Enix concluded that “what fans want most is for us to release the third installment as soon as possible. That takes priority over Rebirth DLC, so we chose that route.”
“That said, once Part 3 is out, there’s a possibility of DLC for that game,” Hamaguchi continued. “With the trilogy concluded, the overall Final Fantasy audience will likely be much larger. Whether we release new DLC or a full game is something we’re actively considering.”
Side note: yes, support characters can wear you down (and yes, Chadley, we mean you). You’re not alone.
Square Enix Promises Better Balance of Story Arcs in Part 3
The publisher seems poised for a bigger reveal, as Hamaguchi teased a gameplay tweak that doesn’t touch the familiar combat system but aims to rebalance narrative arcs. That should please many players after Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was dinged for some overly long sections in the main campaign.
Either way, Square Enix trusts its teams and believes the finale will deliver. As Hamaguchi put it, Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 is being built to win over longtime fans and newcomers alike — ultimately, a game that “will be loved by everyone.”
