TECH NEWS – If you experienced issues with Twitch or other applications yesterday, it was not due to a problem with your device!
An Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage affected half the internet yesterday, causing problems for applications and services across various industries throughout the day. However, the service slowly returned to normal during the evening and night. Major gaming services that were down, such as Fortnite, Roblox, and PlayStation Network, were restored. According to Epic Games’ service status website, all systems are now operational, including the Epic Games Store, Fortnite, Rocket League, and Unreal Engine. Roblox reported the issue as an active incident at the top of its service status page until 9 p.m. in our time zone, but it is now back online.
PlayStation indicates that all of its services are up and running, and Electronic Arts informs us that its services are available again in all games, including Battlefield 6, after players reported issues due to the AWS outage. (It wasn’t the servers that threw in the towel.)
The AWS service page reports that the problem in Northern Virginia has been resolved, and all other regions are operational. If you continue to have connection issues, such as being unable to join a match during matchmaking or only being able to connect to the PlayStation Network after ruling out your own internet connection as the problem, there may still be some issues remaining.
In any case, this problem painted a bleak picture of the future. When all major sites and services rely on a single technology, and that technology fails, everything else fails with it, as we witnessed yesterday. Although the outages have now been resolved, the AWS outage painted a frightening picture of the future. It wouldn’t be surprising if Amazon found itself in an awkward position on the stock market for a few hours because of this; many people were likely angry about the outage.
Update: AWS says the incident originated in the US-EAST-1 (Northern Virginia) region with DNS/DynamoDB involvement and recovered by the evening; major gaming platforms’ status pages (Epic/Fortnite, Roblox, PSN) reflected recovery.
