Go Bald! The Cinema Calls, the Crew Shaves

MOVIE NEWS – A Los Angeles advance screening of Bugonia invited bald viewers to attend.

The showing came with a tempting offer: if someone still had hair, no problem — a barber provided by distributor Focus Film would buzz it off on site with a zero guard, so arriving early was recommended. The hook was that in the film, the protagonist, played by Emma Stone, is also shorn — though her character doesn’t volunteer for the drastic procedure.

Emma Stone has now worked for the fifth time with one of today’s most original directors, Yorgos Lanthimos. Most recently on Kinds of Grace, and before that on Poor Things — the latter earned the actress an Oscar, also bringing her a producing nomination. At the same time, Lanthimos received two nominations as director and producer.

Bugonia is a singular genre blend: a bitter social satire infused with sci-fi, holding a funhouse mirror to our conspiracy-ridden world. The multi-boss played by Stone is kidnapped by two conspiracy-obsessed fanatics (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis) because they believe she’s an alien plotting humanity’s downfall. They chain their captive and shave her head so she can’t signal the mothership.

Bugonia was in competition for the Golden Lion at Venice, and both leads as well as the director are once again cited among the Oscar contenders.
