Scarface: The World Is Yours Remaster: Is This Optional AI Upscaling a Scam? [VIDEO]

The 2006 release, which was a decent Grand Theft Auto clone and a “what if” sequel to the movie, seems suspicious.

There is a Hong Kong–based publisher called EC Digital Entertainment. This company appeared out of nowhere and announced that it would release the open-world, action-adventure game featuring Tony Montana on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. It became available on the latter site for $30, but this was a technical error during the backend configuration. EC Digital Entertainment withdrew it and wrote on Steam that temporary (placeholder) content had been uploaded to Valve’s digital platform and that it would not be present when the game is officially released.

According to EC Digital, Scarface: The World Is Yours (released on PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC in 2006 and on the Nintendo Wii in 2007) will have an optional high-resolution mode. This new visual mode uses an artificial intelligence–based upscaling technique to improve certain visual elements. In theory, however, it is not mandatory to use this mode, and players can switch back to the original graphics at any time. This is highly suspicious, but there’s more to the story.

On Twitter, @__silent__ discovered that the “remaster” published by mistake on the Epic Games Store contains the SilentPatch mod and the Fusion Fix mod pre-installed. @__silent__ created the SilentPatch mod for the game on PC. Due to licensing issues, only one modder was contacted by EC Digital (unsuccessfully). Universal Pictures, the owner of the Scarface license, was not even aware of the project until now. After reading EC Digital’s statement, we can only laugh.

“Hi everyone, we would like to thank all of you who noticed and showed interest in Scarface: The World Is Yours (2006). We’ve recently held urgent discussions with multiple parties regarding the status of the project. After careful consideration, we believe that temporarily hiding the store page is the most appropriate step, and we have already begun coordinating with Valve to implement this change shortly. The current page was initially intended as a placeholder while we worked through ongoing licensing and technical matters. Unfortunately, the unintended release of certain builds on other platforms caused unexpected complications and concerns. Because of this, we feel it’s necessary to pause and reevaluate. We apologize to the community for any confusion or concern this situation may have caused. If things change and we’re able to bring the game back in the future, we’ll let you know right away,” wrote EC Digital.

We think the whole thing is a hoax, so, to quote the movie, “Fuck the fucking Diaz brothers…” Oh, and the two trailers they made? Crap. Just 16:9 zoomed-in footage from the original in 2006. LOL.
