Defect: Team-Based Cyberpunk Shooter from Ex-id Software Developers! [VIDEO]

At first glance, Emptyvessel’s game looks really exciting, and the only question is how long we’ll have to wait for it.

According to Emptyvessel, Defect is set in a futuristic, divided city. Players battle each other in a world controlled by a mysterious artificial intelligence called the System, while ruthless gangs and outlaw law-enforcement elements compete for power. Players can choose from dangerous factions, including the System’s police force, rogue police, and gangs. Players compete to achieve objectives such as smuggling weapons, assassinating or kidnapping targets (including other players), or arresting suspects.

Each mission in Defect is said to be unique, whether we represent the law, lawlessness, or something in between. Our decisions determine how we play with friends in single-player, PvP, or cooperative multiplayer modes. Teams of four compete to complete multiple open-ended objectives and earn valuable items and upgrades that can turn the tide of battle. Because of the chaos, no two firefights play out the same way. Unlike most new shooters, there is no automatic HP regeneration, so players must find health stations to heal if they want to keep fighting. These stations typically have three charges.

Gameplay and Systems

Defect offers extensive environmental destructibility, including multilayer destruction of walls and objects. It also features dynamic dust that fills a room as you tear it apart. This can be used strategically to reduce visibility, either by equipping tactical goggles or by making a quick escape. Environmental interaction also lets players tip over tables and similar objects to create cover and/or block paths.

“Our entire team is excited to show off this first look at Defect gameplay. We’ve poured a ton of passion and time into crafting the game’s tone, atmosphere, and underlying systems. Defect is a HUD-less, immersive shooter where any wall can be destroyed, and where gadgets and tools completely redefine how you approach combat. Every weapon and ammo type affects the world, interactables, and enemies in unique ways. The world is filled with emergent moments and dynamic branching narratives that react to player actions in real time,” said Emptyvessel founder and game director Emanuel Palalic.

Earlier this year, Emptyvessel received $11 million in Series A funding from NCSoft, 1AM Gaming, and Black Phoenix Games to complete the game and develop a single-player mode and console releases. However, it appears that Defect is currently only available for PC wishlisting. The game will ship on PC with a level editor and LAN co-op/PvP support. Defect does not yet have a release date.
