Borderlands 4’s Thin Halloween Update Sends Players Back to 2019

It’s not every day a 2019 title roars back, but that’s Borderlands right now. Even billed as a simple “mini-event,” many fans say the Borderlands 4 Halloween update just isn’t enough.

Spooky season means a wave of themed patches, seasons and limited-time modes. Gearbox joined in with a free Borderlands 4 drop, “Kairos Horrors,” sprinkling in a few additions. The catch: it’s so light that plenty of players have fired up Borderlands 3 for a meatier, more polished Halloween ride.

According to the official Borderlands site, “Horrors of Kairos” was framed from the outset as a seasonal mini-event, not on the scale of prior franchise blowouts. World bosses now come with a blood-rain twist and two Legendary rewards: the Murmur AR and the Skully grenade. The event has been live for a few days and runs through November 6.

Players still consider “Kairos Horrors” undercooked. As TheGamer notes, Reddit user UltraSuperDonut points back to Borderlands 3’s “Bloody Harvest,” which offered more enemies, the Maurice NPC, a themed mission, an extra zone and other goodies. Initially limited to late October/early November in 2019 and 2020, Gearbox made it permanent in 2021.

Emphasizing how much more content Bloody Harvest delivered, UltraSuperDonut wrote: “Borderlands 4’s Halloween event is so bad I booted up Borderlands 3 just to get a good one.” The replies echo the sentiment—praise for BL3’s overhaul, criticism for BL4’s latest effort.

Boycott Talk Didn’t Change the Outcome

Borderlands 4 has had a bumpy run, but it still chalked up a win: September’s best-selling game in the U.S. That result surprised many after CEO Randy Pitchford’s controversial remarks sparked calls for a boycott. In practice, the movement fizzled, and the new entry opened strong commercially.
