Bugonia: Emma Stone Hid Her Shaved Head for Months

MOVIE NEWS – Emma Stone wore a wig for three long months because she wanted to hide that her head had been shaved for her role in Bugonia.

“With Poor Things (Stone’s 2023 film, also directed by Bugonia’s Yorgos Lanthimos), it worked really well to reveal my long black hair only at the last moment,” Stone told People magazine. “Everyone was shocked when the trailer came out.”

Since Bugonia was mostly shot on studio sets and no production stills were released, the team decided to keep her bald look under wraps as long as possible. Stone wore wigs in public for three months, including at the New York Film Festival a year ago. By March, her hair had grown enough for a pixie cut at the Golden Globes. Many congratulated her on the “new look,” unaware that her hair had literally started from zero.

Bugonia is Yorgos Lanthimos’s reinterpretation of the 2003 South Korean sci-fi satire Save the Green Planet! The story follows two men (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis) convinced that aliens plan to destroy Earth — and that one is already among us, disguised as a corporate president. They kidnap the woman (Stone) and shave her head so she cannot signal the other extraterrestrials.

Bugonia was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and Stone is already being mentioned among Oscar contenders.

(Release: November 6, 2025.)
