iPhone 17: Is the Base Model’s Display Cheaper Despite ProMotion?

TECH NEWS – Despite its much lower purchase price compared to the two Pro models, the iPhone 17 features ProMotion technology.

Apple refreshed the iPhone 17 lineup by bringing ProMotion to the base model — arguably one of the smartest moves for its flagship family. The $700 price tag stayed put while the device gained several meaningful upgrades. That combination has fueled strong global demand, particularly in China. Apple managed to hold pricing steady versus the iPhone 16 in part by cutting display costs. As reported by Chosun, the iPhone 17’s OLED panel is roughly 42% cheaper than the panels used in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, giving Apple ample flexibility on MSRP.

Per UBI Research, Samsung and LG currently dominate the iPhone 17 display supply, accounting for 98% of units shipped. Samsung supplied 57.3 million panels for a 64.5% share, while LG shipped 30.3 million units for 34.1%. BOE failed to make a dent, delivering just 1.3 million units for a 1.4% share.

LG is supplying OLED panels for the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The base model’s display is estimated at around $40 per unit, while Apple pays $60–$70 for the Pro and Pro Max panels. Notably, this is the first year Apple standardized ProMotion across the entire lineup — and yet the base iPhone 17’s panel remains cheaper.

A closer look at specs shows the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max share the same peak brightness and HDR10 support. Only the Pro Max boasts a higher-resolution OLED than the other two models, which likely contributes to its higher cost. The Pro models also use ultra-thin bezels that are harder and more expensive to manufacture, further widening the price gap.
