The Call of Duty Movie Might Finally Be In The Right Hands

MOVIE NEWS – The Call of Duty film could hardly be better positioned: Taylor Sheridan (Sicario) is writing the live-action adaptation of Activision’s shooter, with Peter Berg (Lone Survivor) directing.

Paramount seems to have signaled today that it has no intention of squandering the chance to make a quality Call of Duty movie. When Hollywood lines up a feature based on a major game franchise, nerves are justified, since the IP is often a quick cash grab. Here, though, that does not appear to be the case if you look at the team the studio has assembled.

Per Deadline, Taylor Sheridan (Sicario) and Peter Berg (Lone Survivor) are on the script, with Berg also set to direct. Sheridan is fresh off headlines about a multibillion-dollar NBCUniversal pact, and for good reason: he crafts tense, emotionally resonant stories driven by complex, morally ambiguous characters, exactly the ingredients fans expect in a Call of Duty film.

Sicario remains the showcase of his voice, plunging viewers into the drug war along the U.S.–Mexico border and marking his first major screenplay. He has since delivered gripping work with Mayor of Kingstown, while in the military arena Special Operations: Lioness underlined his range. Peter Berg brings deep chops directing war action, with Lone Survivor as his standout, even if Battleship landed softer. His biggest edge, however, lies elsewhere.

A Director Who Has Already Shot Call of Duty in Live Action

His familiarity with the franchise is clear. Dig into his filmography and you will find he has worked with Activision before, helming two live-action promos: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: The Vet & The n00b featuring Sam Worthington, and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare: Discover Your Power with Taylor Kitsch and Emily Ratajkowski. They are not flashy calling cards, yet Berg plainly understands Call of Duty and is comfortable steering nine-figure productions stacked with war and police set pieces. Paired with Sheridan’s instincts and ideas, the result should at least be ambitious and worthy of one of gaming’s biggest brands.

It is also worth recalling that Steven Spielberg’s name once surfaced, a noted fan of video games. This update arrives just weeks before Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 launches, which makes the timing interesting.
