A major PS Portal capability appears to have leaked — one that could significantly boost the value of Sony’s handheld accessory.
Several PS Store listings now indicate you can “buy and play immediately via streaming” on PS Portal with PS Plus Premium. In other words, native cloud streaming for games you own — the most requested feature — could be right around the corner.
It’s been over two years since PS Portal debuted, but only in the past year has it matured into a truly independent device. As many will recall, PlayStation Portal launched as a Remote Play companion, meaning your PS5 had to be powered on to access purchased games. That changed last year when PS Portal added cloud gaming support, albeit in a fairly limited form.
Streaming Your Own Library On PS Portal?
Until now, streaming on PS Portal required a PS Plus Premium membership — the top PlayStation tier — and access was capped to a catalog of a little over 120 games. Now, however, Sony seems to have let slip details suggesting the handheld could go further, moving beyond the beta-like phase introduced last year. A Reddit find (subsequently confirmed by 3DJuegos) indicates PS Portal will let you stream games you’ve purchased — or at least a subset of them — directly from the cloud.
While Sony hasn’t officially confirmed the upgrade, it increasingly looks like the device’s next major step. Some PS Store product pages suggest you’ll be able to “buy and play instantly via streaming” on PS Portal with PS Plus Premium. Using the mobile app, we captured a screenshot of the The Outer Worlds 2 store page that displayed the message.
PS Portal’s trajectory points to enabling cloud play for owned titles — the community’s most-requested feature may finally be within reach.
“Buy this game, then stream it and play immediately on PS Portal or PS5 (PS Plus Premium only).” In practical terms, you may no longer need your PS5 switched on (via Wccftech). Not every game shows this language yet; it appears only on select listings. If implemented, PS Portal would gain true console independence, and PS Plus Premium would become more compelling by allowing instant cloud access to newly purchased releases.
Should Sony proceed down this path, it’s poised to be a crowd-pleaser — at least according to users. “This is what I’m waiting for. I own a PS Portal and I’m waiting for this,” says one. “I think this feature lands next month, before Black Friday,” predicts another. “Being able to stream my games without turning on the PS5 would be fantastic,” adds a third.
