The team is currently finishing Grand Theft Auto VI and designed a game peppered with mythological elements.
While Rockstar is best known for the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption franchises, the studio was much more diverse a few years ago. More than a decade ago, the studio worked on different types of games, including racing games like Midnight Club and experimental sports games like Table Tennis. According to Dan Houser, the team recently attempted to create a medieval game, but the project was unsuccessful.
Recently, Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser sat down with Lex Fridman to discuss the studio’s history. Referring to the many Rockstar projects that never came to fruition, Houser mentioned a concept involving knights and mythological elements. He said they experimented with the knight concept and attempted to create a mythological game. He still likes the idea. He confirmed that they only briefly discussed the project and that it never made it to the writing stage. However, Houser thinks the idea would work well as a full game. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a medieval game from Rockstar, of course. There were rumors about the development of such a game in 2019, but many thought the rumors were false.
Now that Dan Houser has clarified the situation, there is little doubt that the project actually existed. Interestingly, fans would still love to see a medieval game from Rockstar, and the demand is evident even today. Houser also discussed the studio’s spy-themed project, Agent. The game was in development during the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 era but never made it very far in the production process.
Currently, the team is fully focused on Grand Theft Auto VI, hoping to create the best game possible. We may see it in May.
