While Electronic Arts prepares to go private, BioWare—one of its studios—has tried to calm the waters. Whether it will succeed remains to be seen.
Back in 2020—five years ago—BioWare announced that the fifth Mass Effect game was in development. Work is still ongoing, according to executive producer Mike Gamble in an N7 Day blog post (N7 refers to November 7). Here’s what Gamble said about the franchise’s future:
“First, let’s set the record straight: the next Mass Effect is in development, and Electronic Arts and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe. The truth is, the last few years have been incredibly busy for BioWare. Right now, though, the team is focused exclusively on Mass Effect. We have a lot of universe to cover, lots of features to build, and lots of romances to figure out. We’re excited about what we’re building, and we promise you: when we’re ready, it’ll be fun to show you. Until then, thank you for your patience—I see you looking for secret meanings in my tweets (okay, sometimes there are).”
He also touched on the Mass Effect TV series currently in development at Amazon: “I haven’t talked about it much, but you may have heard something about a television series. We’ve been working closely with Amazon, and we’re thrilled with the ideas their talented team has come up with. The writers’ room is in full swing, and we’ve worked out how it fits within Mass Effect canon and where it sits relative to the new game. The show will tell a brand-new story within the universe’s timeline and will be set after the original trilogy. It won’t retell Commander Shepard’s story because, after all… that’s your story.”
Could the new Mass Effect be BioWare’s last hope?
