MOVIE NEWS – The first chilly images from the new Resident Evil set reveal the setting and give fresh weight to a circulating plot rumor. The director of Weapons and Barbarian is already rolling cameras on the saga’s next film. Will this be the one that does the series justice
We have been talking about the next Resident Evil movie for months, but only this week did on-set photos arrive that hint at what we will see when it opens on September 18, 2026. The stills do not spill much beyond a wintry backdrop and a few winks to the franchise, yet they do appear to support an insider claim.
Without straying into unnecessary spoilers, images shared by local outlet The Prague Reporter point to a snowbound Raccoon City. One shot shows a police car marked Martin County Sheriff’s Office, suggesting part of the action could unfold in the American Midwest. Another shows signage for the Oak Street Diner, which reminded some viewers of Resident Evil 6.
So far, so measured. The most striking element may be a city map that implies a larger Raccoon City, not the small town with an outsized police station seen in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. At the same time, as Eurogamer notes, the snow-covered setting aligns with a purported plot outline shared a few weeks ago by Daniel RPK.

What the Alleged Plot Leak Claims
The insider is not infallible, which is why the rumor was treated cautiously at first. The new photos lend it a bit more credibility, if only a bit. According to Daniel Ritchman, Austin Abrams plays Bryan, an organ courier heading to Raccoon City General Hospital at night. “Along a snowy mountain road, he accidentally hits a strange woman with his car. She survives, but something is very wrong.” That is where we will stop.
Director Zach Cregger, who proved his horror chops with Weapons and Barbarian, has assured fans that his film tells an entirely original story that exists within the world of Resident Evil 2 and 3, while embracing the mood of 4. In other words, expect a tale set in the time and place of the second and third games, with a script that channels the fourth, which Cregger has repeatedly cited as his favorite in Capcom’s series.
Daniel RPK’s rumor points in that direction, implying the catastrophic event everyone knows from Resident Evil has not happened yet. Beyond that, details are scarce. What we do know is that Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, Zack Cherry, and Kali Reis are attached, and the project seems to be in capable hands. With any luck, this time gamers will get a film they can embrace after less satisfying detours, including Netflix’s live-action series.
