Genki’s game has been given a release date on Sony’s current-generation console, so it’s only natural that the latest installment in the franchise will be released on the PlayStation console as well.
Tokyo Xtreme Racer is a racing game set in a futuristic, closed-off version of Tokyo. Compete against powerful rivals on the city’s highways and aim to reach the top in your customized cars. Drive real cars on meticulously recreated courses, compete against rivals, weave through traffic, and engage in nerve-wracking battles. This is an unparalleled series.
Unlike regular racing games, the SP Battle feature is unique in that it is based on Spirit Points, a numeric value that quantifies drivers’ willpower. Your speed is tested, but you must also master mind games and break your opponent’s resolve. The Tokyo Expressway has been faithfully reproduced, and its complex twists and dramatic elevation changes deliver an adrenaline-pumping racing experience that’s as close to the real thing as it gets. The race begins with a flash of headlights as you face off against rivals with distinctive cars and bold driving styles.
In Japan, the franchise is known as Shutoko Battle, and there are more installments there than in the West. In Europe, the franchise has various names. The first installment was released on the SEGA Dreamcast as Tokyo Highway Challenge, and the sequel was titled Tokyo Highway Challenge 2. Shutoko Battle 0 was released as Tokyo Xtreme Racer. In 2005, Kaido Racer was released on PS2 (originally released as Kaido Battle 2: Chain Reaction), followed by its sequel, Kaido Racer 2, the next year.
Tokyo Xtreme Racer received its release date for the PlayStation 5 during State of Play, which is aimed at the Japanese market. Although Genki confirmed the port at the end of September, the release date was not announced. Now we do: February 26 at a price of $/€50. There will also be a disc release in Japan, where it will be available for 7,600 yen (about $50).
