Get ready, because according to Sony, the real defining blockbuster of the PlayStation 5 era still hasn’t arrived. Eric Lempel, a senior vice president at PlayStation, insists that players have yet to see the game that will ultimately become this generation’s biggest best-seller.
We are in the middle of a week crammed with announcements, and once again, PlayStation is one of the main protagonists. Almost exactly as the PS5 approaches its fifth anniversary, Sony’s latest financial report confirms that the console has already surpassed 84 million units sold. All this while the system still has plenty of life ahead of it, with a PS6 nowhere near the horizon. In other words, the current PlayStation hardware has not hit its ceiling yet – in fact, it has now emerged that players have not even received the game that will go down as this generation’s top seller.
At least, that is what Eric Lempel, senior vice president at PlayStation, said in an interview with the BBC to mark the PS5’s anniversary. Talking about the life span of the console and its library, he explained that “we’re at our peak right now”, and repeated the message that Sony has been sending for some time about the system’s future: since there is still “a lot of quality content” coming to PS5, the company “will simply continue with the PS5”. The official line is clear – Sony is not in a hurry to move on.
The really striking part came when Lempel continued to talk about where the PS5 is headed, and argued that players still have not seen the title that will become the generation’s biggest hit. “I’m not going to tell you what it is, but I think it’s still to come”, he said. As usual in situations like this, those few words were enough to spark a wave of speculation: the community is already pointing at long-awaited releases and iconic PlayStation franchises that could easily shift millions of copies.
GTA VI, Wolverine, Or Something Completely New?
Lempel did not even clarify whether the generation’s biggest seller will be created by one of the many teams inside the PlayStation Studios family. It is entirely possible he was hinting at a first party title such as Wolverine, developed by Insomniac Games and currently scheduled for a fall 2026 release. At the same time, the vague wording also leaves the door open for a huge third party success like GTA VI, which was recently delayed and is now expected to launch on November 19, 2026. In both scenarios we are dealing with games that are, quite literally, still to come.
But what if Lempel was actually thinking of something that has not even been revealed to the public yet? In that case, there is room for wild imagination: some fans are already dreaming of new entries in juggernaut series such as God of War or The Last of Us – even if, right now, we know that the Naughty Dog team is focused on developing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Whatever the answer turns out to be, one thing is clear: the PS5 generation still has a long road ahead, and if PlayStation’s vice president is to be believed, players can expect more than a few big surprises before it is over.
