In the New Film From the John Wick Creator, Colin Farrell Delivers Justice as a Priest

MOVIE NEWS – Derek Kolstad, the mind behind John Wick, is gearing up for a new, hard-hitting action film in which the main character is not a hitman but a priest in a cassock who serves justice alongside communion. In Ordained, Colin Farrell plays a man of the cloth whose past is as dark as the people who now want him dead.

Derek Kolstad is still chasing the lightning he bottled with Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski in the John Wick saga, which has since grown into a full-blown film and TV universe. Even if Ballerina stumbled at the box office, the template of a ruthless, tightly focused avenger has taken root, and projects that echo that formula keep popping up.

Ordained is very much in that lane, an action thriller produced by the Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame) and based on an as-yet-unpublished comic from Bad Idea Comics. The film follows Father Roy Craig, a priest who administers last rites to a mob boss who miraculously pulls through, but only after confessing his crimes. According to the synopsis, “Soon after, he becomes the target of hitmen, dirty cops, and gangsters, all sent by the mob boss who wants to silence him. But Father Roy secretly has a violent past that makes him a far more dangerous target than anyone expects.”

On paper, it sounds like another one-man army mowing down a body count fit for a Guinness record, but there is a twist: the hero is bound by the Fifth Commandment. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, Roy strictly follows the rule “Thou shalt not kill”, which makes him a little like Batman when the character actually sticks to that line in the sand. That self-imposed limit gives Kolstad’s script some extra bite and makes the path ahead much more complicated for his protagonist.

Everything also sells better with Colin Farrell on the poster. According to THR, the Irish actor is set to play Roy, and on paper, it is a pitch-perfect match that could offer a very entertaining alternative to John Wick. With the Russo Brothers producing, a certain level of technical polish and muscular action is almost guaranteed, and the big question is whether Farrell’s priest can be as magnetic as Keanu Reeves’ legendary assassin or Bob Odenkirk’s battered antihero in Nobody.

And what about John Wick himself? John Wick 5 is officially in development, with both Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski expected to return. Stahelski is currently busy rebooting Highlander with Henry Cavill, so it is unlikely we will see the next chapter in the saga within the next couple of years. In the meantime, Lionsgate is toying with other spin-offs, although it remains to be seen which of them will survive after the underwhelming performance of Ballerina.
