Half-Life 3: According to Leaks, an Announcement Is Coming, But When? [VIDEO]

While insiders cannot agree on this, they do agree that the long-awaited Half-Life sequel is in development.

Valve fans were delighted by the announcement of the Steam Frame, the new Steam Machine, and the new Steam Controller—except for those waiting for Half-Life 3. Several insiders have confirmed that Gabe Newell’s team will announce a game relatively soon; however, the timing of the announcement is unclear. Gabe Follower, who covers Counter-Strike 2 and correctly leaked information about Deadlock (the studio’s next third-person multiplayer shooter/MOBA game, currently in early development), says that Half-Life 3, codenamed HLX, will be announced before the end of the year. Another Valve insider, Tyler McVicker, who leaked details about Half-Life: Alyx, said in a Twitch stream that he believes news about it will surface within the next two to three weeks.

However, in the latest episode of Insider Gaming Weekly, the hosts shared a different opinion based on their sources. Mike Straw said that the announcement will not come at The Game Awards in December, despite his previous mention that Valve is preparing something besides hardware announcements. Tom Henderson, the founder of Insider Gaming and a renowned leaker, added that he had heard a major, currently unannounced game will be released in March. Given that the Steam Machine/Frame/Controller trio is arriving early in the year, it makes sense that Half-Life 3 will be available at launch, especially for the new Steam Machine.

Valve has publicly stated that the key to the success of the Steam Machine is having more games than previous versions. Although Valve was primarily referring to the extensive Steam library, new gaming platforms have long benefited from the existence of a killer app, or a game that sells hardware. If Half-Life 3 were only available on Steam platforms, the Steam Machine would be the only console-like platform on which it could be played, undoubtedly boosting its initial sales.
