It cannot be ruled out that the French publisher, led by Yves Guillemot, did not announce its quarterly financial results because serious takeover negotiations are currently underway.
A few days ago, Ubisoft took the unusual step of postponing the publication of its midyear results and suspending trading of its shares. This delay suggests that Ubisoft is preparing to make an important announcement about its future, sparking numerous rumors. Some suspected that Ubisoft would soon be acquired by a major player in the gaming industry, and this rumor now seems more likely than ever. According to an industry insider, a Ubisoft employee claimed that the publisher would soon be acquired.
A tweet by Detective Seeds claims that trading has been suspended due to serious M&A negotiations aimed at closing the deal. The employee adds that a non-U.S.-based party is considering buying Ubisoft and that rumors about the buyer have been circulating in the industry for some time. Therefore, it is highly likely that either Tencent or Sony wants to acquire Ubisoft. Ultimately, Ubisoft partnered with Tencent to create a new game development subsidiary, giving the Chinese giant a 25% stake. It is possible that Tencent is now in talks to acquire Ubisoft outright. Ubisoft has neither confirmed nor denied the acquisition, stating only that trading has been suspended to avoid unnecessary speculation during the delay.
However, Omar Alamoudi, who had previously accurately predicted the return of Onimusha and the withdrawal of Xbox from the Middle East, wrote in a tweet that the world’s largest publishers will be acquired within a generation. In a subsequent reply, after complaining that the press had picked up on his comments, he named Tencent as the potential buyer. We’ll find out soon!
