MOVIE NEWS – The days of endless waiting for new stories from the Game of Thrones universe are coming to an end. HBO and Warner Bros. have finally confirmed what everyone suspected by locking in fresh seasons of House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. At the very least, 2026, 2027 and 2028 will each bring a new visit to Westeros, securing George R. R. Martin’s fantasy saga on the Max schedule for years to come.
It took the network some time, but HBO seems to have accepted that if it wants its flagship fantasy world to keep pulling in huge audiences, it can no longer afford to leave fans hanging for years between premieres. That is why the company has now guaranteed that, over the next three years, there will always be at least one Game of Thrones-related show streaming new episodes. The way they chose to send that message was simple, they officially renewed both of their current spinoff series.
More specifically, Warner Bros.’ streaming platform has ordered a second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, currently slated to arrive in 2027, while the first season is scheduled to hit HBO Max this coming January 19. The renewal hardly comes as a surprise, since strong hints had already suggested that new episodes might start shooting as early as this winter, but until now there was no formal statement confirming it. Even though HBO has not put it in writing, there is also speculation that a third season could film in 2026, aiming for a 2028 or even 2029 release in order to avoid the problem that Stranger Things ran into with Dexter Sol Ansell (Egg), namely the risk that he will grow up too much and no longer convincingly look like a child.
Two Series, And Maybe Something Else On The Horizon
House of the Dragon is due back on HBO Max this summer with its third season, and on top of that the network has announced a renewal for a fourth and, barring any surprises, final run. This timetable gives HBO plenty of breathing room to prepare the scripts and get cameras rolling in time to deliver those concluding episodes in 2028, without having to wait, as it did in the past, for ratings and audience data before committing to the future of the show.
All told, 2026 is shaping up to be a dream year for Game of Thrones fans, since they could have as many as two Westeros-set series on their screens, while 2027 and 2028 look no less exciting, with at least one project already confirmed for each year. We say “at least” because HBO is quietly developing other spinoffs as well, including one centered on Aegon the Conqueror, which could help this fantasy universe keep extending its winning streak.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer new seasons of these two series over the next three years to the legion of fans of the Game of Thrones universe. Together, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reveal just how vast and rich the universe imagined by George R. R. Martin still is. In January, I think audiences will be captivated by the inspiring story of Dunk and Egg, two characters down on their luck, so magnificently brought to life by George and Ira Parker. And this summer, House of the Dragon will reignite passions once again with some of its most epic battles to date.” (Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of Programming, HBO)
We should also remember that HBO is currently filming its new Harry Potter television remake, which for now also seems to have at least two seasons guaranteed. What happens beyond that will depend on how audiences respond, especially given how vividly many fans still remember the original films. In any case, it is obvious that fantasy will remain one of the platform’s main calling cards in the coming years, alongside superheroes, which under the DCU banner are bringing their own high-profile projects, such as a science fiction thriller built around the Green Lanterns, reportedly not too far off on the release calendar.
