Although the Polish developers acknowledge that Larian’s game is excellent, Baldur’s Gate 3 is merely a source of inspiration for CD Projekt RED (CDPR).
Baldur’s Gate 3 brought the CRPG style back into the spotlight. More importantly, Larian proved that highly reactive, player-driven stories, spontaneous narratives, and mischief are still appealing. However, while the game’s success was inspiring, according to CD Projekt co-president Michał Nowakowski, it doesn’t necessarily mean that CDPR’s games will follow suit. Nowakowski says that although Baldur’s Gate 3 provided a lot of inspiration, they will stick to the concepts of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. They don’t just want to make another game with better graphics; they want innovation.
Nowakowski has not yet revealed how this will work. However, he emphasized that it will not resemble Divinity or Baldur’s Gate because they will not be making a game like Larian’s. In his opinion, Larian is good at that, while CDPR is good at other things. Many aspects of the game’s interaction with the world and its mechanics have certainly inspired CDPR, though. In the previous years, CDPR has already taken the Witcher franchise in new directions with spin-offs such as Gwent and Thronebreaker. At some point, CDPR decided that the in-house team should focus on the most important games instead of spin-offs. Maybe that will change, but, given their current structure, they don’t necessarily want to stray from that approach.
We can’t wait to see what CDPR’s next open-world game will be like. Cyberpunk 2077 took a while to find its footing but ended up being quite appealing, aside from its scandalous state at launch, and it’s no secret that The Witcher 3 is still considered one of the best RPGs, even ten years later.
