Clair Obscur Star Says His Game Awards Nomination Really Belongs To Someone Else

“This great performance is really thanks to him.” Many players may not even recognize his name, but one of the actors behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 knows exactly who deserves the credit. Charlie Cox, who plays Gustave in the RPG, has made it clear that his Best Performance nomination at The Game Awards is built on the work of another artist – motion capture actor Maxence Cazorla.

We are heading into the closing weeks of 2025, and the big shows that crown the best games of the year are almost here. The Golden Joystick Awards have already handed their Game of the Year trophy to Expedition 33, but Sandfall Interactive’s title is also looking to dominate Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards. With 12 nominations in total, the RPG has set a new record for the show, and one of the people behind that achievement, Charlie Cox, insists that his own nod for Best Performance should be seen as shared recognition rather than a solo victory.

Alongside its Game of the Year and Best Narrative nominations, the French game has gone all in on acting with an impressive triple presence in the Best Performance category. Ben Starr, Jennifer English, and Charlie Cox are all competing against each other, which practically guarantees that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will walk away with at least one more award for its shelf, no matter which of the three actually wins on the night.

Maxence Cazorla And Charlie Cox Share A Game Awards Nomination

It is worth remembering, however, that while this trio provided the voices and in some cases the motion capture for the main cast, a lot of the heavy lifting was done off camera by a group of French actors who were involved throughout production. Speaking about this during a visit to Mexico, Cox took the opportunity to underline that his nomination for bringing Gustave to life simply would not exist without one of those colleagues: Maxence Cazorla.

As Cox explains, the French performer was responsible for most of Gustave’s physical acting through motion capture sessions. On top of that, Cazorla not only embodied Gustave in the original version of the game, he also voices Esquie in both the French and English dubs. For Cox, that contribution deserves to be highlighted every time his name comes up: “I have said this before, and I think it is worth repeating: there is an incredible French actor called Maxence Cazorla who did almost all of the motion capture for Gustave. So any nomination I receive, I have to give him credit for it as well.”

In video games, bringing a digital character to life is always a team effort. Even when one star is the face of a role in marketing materials, other artists are handling motion capture, stand-in performances, and early voice work that never make it to the credits. Within that context, Cox did not hesitate to state that “the strong performance you see on screen is thanks to him”, making it clear that Cazorla’s work is every bit as important as his own.

Who ultimately takes home the statue will be revealed on December 11, 2025. And the race is not limited to the three Clair Obscur actors: Sandfall may have the numerical advantage, but Konatsu Kato is also in the running for Silent Hill f, Troy Baker is nominated for Indiana Jones and the Grand Circle, and Erika Iishi is competing thanks to her role in Ghost of Yotei. It is a fiercely contested category, which only makes Cox and Cazorla’s shared spotlight feel more significant.
