Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed Series May Take Fans To Ancient Rome With Emperor Nero

MOVIE NEWS – According to a new report, Netflix’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed series is heading straight for ancient Rome, unfolding between 54 and 68 AD during Emperor Nero’s rule, with his mentor Seneca also in the mix and actor Toby Wallace leading an ensemble of younger characters at the heart of the story.

As Ubisoft pivots its long-term strategy toward a handful of core IPs, the publisher is pushing hard to grow the Assassin’s Creed brand beyond games and into large-scale screen projects. The 2016 live-action Assassin’s Creed movie, however, failed to make its mark, drawing harsh reviews from critics and leaving audiences underwhelmed, which cast doubt on the franchise’s cinematic ambitions for years.

Even so, Netflix gave the green light earlier this year to a second live-action adaptation, and the latest reports suggest that Ubisoft is finally zeroing in on one of the most requested historical settings. According to a recent leak, Netflix’s take on Assassin’s Creed is reportedly set in ancient Rome, a backdrop fans have been requesting for a long time in the games.

Why this matters is easy to understand: the new report has many fans genuinely excited at the prospect of a high-profile live-action adaptation, but there is also a sense of anxiety in the air, given how poorly Ubisoft’s previous attempt at an Assassin’s Creed movie turned out.

The report from Nexus Point News claims that the show will be set somewhere between 54 and 68 AD, with Emperor Nero playing a role in the narrative. His mentor, Seneca the Younger, is also said to appear, potentially giving the series a strong philosophical and political thread that fits neatly with the franchise’s taste for conspiracies and power struggles.

On top of that, well-known actor Toby Wallace is reportedly one of the central figures in the ensemble cast, which means multiple younger characters are expected to share the spotlight. For now, though, there are no concrete details about who he will be playing or how his character ties into the larger Assassin’s Creed mythos.

The show is expected to follow its cast across several pivotal historical events from the period. Behind the camera, Halo and Sons of Anarchy veteran showrunners David Wiener and Robert Patino are attached as co-leads and executive producers, a combination that points toward a high-budget, prestige-style production.

On the flip side, reports indicate that Ubisoft and Netflix are also collaborating on multiple other Assassin’s Creed projects, though nothing concrete has been revealed about these additional shows yet, leaving plenty of room for speculation about timelines, characters, and tones.

Nexus Point News has established a solid track record of leaking game adaptations, including information related to an Elden Ring project in the past. Even so, neither Ubisoft nor Netflix has commented on this latest scoop so far, so it is still wise to treat all of these details as unconfirmed until an official announcement is made.
