Stranger Things Season Five Slips Up With a Capcom Classic – And the Explanation Is Pretty Embarrassing

MOVIE NEWS – Stranger Things’ fifth season leans heavily into ’80s nostalgia, but one “unforgivable” mistake slipped through: the show misrepresented a classic Capcom game, and the reason behind it is downright silly.

I’ve already watched the first four episodes of season five, and like many viewers, I’m torn about how this grand finale begins. One thing remains unchanged, though: the Duffer Brothers still know how to tap into ’80s nostalgia, including a nod to a legendary video game. The problem? They used the wrong version.

In Chapter Three, “Turnbow’s Trap,” we meet Derek Turnbow (Jake Connelly), the quintessential nerdy kid with a bedroom overflowing with toys, action figures, and video games. We see a Hang-On arcade cabinet and a Nintendo Entertainment System hooked up… where Derek is shown playing the brutally hard *Ghosts ‘n Goblins* (1985). Except it isn’t the NES version.

Not All Versions of Ghosts ‘n Goblins Were the Same

Sharp-eyed viewers noticed instantly that Derek was playing the arcade edition of the game, not the NES port. The arcade version featured a richer color palette, bigger and more detailed sprites, and deeper backgrounds, thanks to more powerful hardware. It’s a small oversight, but one that can stick out like a sore thumb.

Fans quickly found a hilariously mundane explanation: the production team likely searched YouTube for the game’s name, followed by “HD,” then grabbed footage from the first video that popped up. That theory comes from @thegrayfruit on X. Netflix hasn’t commented yet, but aside from this hiccup, the series has historically been solid when it comes to period accuracy.

Stranger Things returns on December 26 with three new episodes, while the finale arrives January 1 at 2:00 AM (Spanish time), reportedly movie-length. That’s when we’ll finally learn how the story that began with “The Disappearance of Will Byers” in 2016 reaches its conclusion. The universe lives on, however, with an animated series already in development.
