The franchise’s 30th anniversary seems to be shaping up to be quite the celebration, with Lara Croft poised to make a major comeback in 2026.
Fans of the Tomb Raider franchise have been waiting a long time for a new project. While rumors have been circulating in recent weeks about an open-world, AAA game from Crystal Dynamics, it seems that a different project is also in the works. According to a reputable source, the original Tomb Raider is getting a complete remake and will be announced next week at The Game Awards. The as-yet-unannounced remake is expected to be released next year.

Raiders Society clarified on Twitter that, according to their sources, the remake of the 1996 game Tomb Raider, released for SEGA Saturn, PS1, and PC, will be announced at The Game Awards. This announcement follows the original game’s previous remaster and remake. (The former was recently released by Aspyr, and the latter was Tomb Raider Anniversary in 2007.) The insider did not reveal any further details about the new remake. Perhaps it is a complete remake that uses elements of the original story but fits into the new survival timeline. This rumor coincides with a statement by the reliable insider Tom Henderson. Henderson claimed that the Tomb Raider team at Eidos Montreal is developing an ambitious open-world third-person action-adventure game expected to release next year.
It is not yet known whether these are the same games, so we recommend treating the rumors with caution. The timing of the Tomb Raider remake is also fitting, as the series will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year. The conclusion of season two of the Netflix series is also linked to the original Tomb Raider game.
Incidentally, Crystal Dynamics’ open-world, AAA Tomb Raider project is progressing smoothly despite the studio’s lack of news releases about it. The game is set in India and features Lara Croft in her prime. In any case, it’s about time for its release or for us to hear some news about it. Perhaps at The Game Awards?
