Although Grand Theft Auto VI is still nearly a year away, Grand Theft Auto V, released on PC over ten years ago, is also receiving attention.
While Rockstar takes its time polishing Grand Theft Auto VI into a neon-lit blockbuster, a hobby modder has decided to create his own Grand Theft Auto multiverse. FV Mods, who reportedly runs on caffeine and willpower alone, has released a trilogy of massive map expansions for GTA V, transforming San Andreas into the world’s most incoherent tourist map.
First came Oldburries, a fictional Canadian countryside with farms and pine forests. There’s also a town that feels like we accidentally ended up there while following bad navigation instructions. Next was Largo Hillio, an island resembling a national park and a racetrack connected by a massive suspension bridge. Finally came the European Freeway Project, an eight-lane, continent-spanning highway. FV Mods just wanted to expand the world in a way that Rockstar never will. According to the modder, Grand Theft Auto V is ten years old, but that doesn’t mean the map has to be.
All three regions can be loaded simultaneously, allowing you to fly between them. Grand Theft Auto V becomes a kind of DIY flight simulator. Instead of landing at an airport, you land in a quiet Canadian town with a stolen plane. Most importantly, you can take all of this incredibly seriously. A single creator is slowly surrounding the original San Andreas with new land areas until the map resembles a confusing vacation brochure. This kind of modding energy can only come from someone who took the delay of Grand Theft Auto VI as a personal insult.
If we want to visit rural Canada, a forest racetrack, and an EU highway all in one place, we can.
