Path of Exile 2 has long struggled with uneven frame rates during early access, but starting December 12, a major update will deliver significantly higher FPS and a far more stable experience across all platforms.
During its early access period, Path of Exile 2 has occasionally suffered from performance instability, particularly on consoles. Veteran players know the real stress test begins in the endgame, where hordes of enemies and explosive effects overwhelm the screen, pushing the CPU to its limits and triggering frame rate drops that disrupt the action.
Grinding Gear Games is fully aware of the frustration this causes, and according to reporting from Eurogamer, the studio is preparing a substantial fix in the upcoming major update. The core improvement focuses on the way the game manages CPU load, a system the developers have rewritten to better distribute processing demands. Patch 0.4.0, set to arrive on December 12, aims to deliver “at least a 25 percent increase in FPS” precisely where players most need it.
This optimization will benefit all platforms, but the impact will be most pronounced on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game’s co-directors emphasized that since console hardware cannot be upgraded, the game must be engineered to run smoothly under every circumstance. “On consoles, you can’t upgrade the hardware, so we have to ensure the game performs well in all scenarios,” explains co-director Marl Roberts.
The update also revises endgame design in a way that indirectly improves performance. High-level zones will feature fewer monsters overall, but each enemy will have 40 percent more health and reward roughly 40 percent more experience and loot. Progression and rewards remain intact, while CPU pressure is relieved and combat readability improves. Should these promises hold, Path of Exile 2 will take a meaningful step toward resolving its performance issues ahead of its full launch, expected sometime in mid-to-late 2026.
