System Shock Remake: Nintendo Switch Ports Coming This Year! [VIDEO]

We already know when Nightdive Studios’ game will be released on the Nintendo Switch 2 and the 2017 handheld.

Nightdive Studios’ stunningly faithful recreation of the 1994 science fiction action shooter/immersive sim received critical acclaim when it was released for PC in 2023 and for consoles in 2024. Soon, Nintendo gamers will experience this classic for the first time. The original evil rogue AI, Shodan, will flaunt her superiority on their devices as they journey through the dark depths of Citadel Station. The System Shock remake combines the original game’s gameplay with high-definition visuals, updated controls, an overhauled interface, and new sounds and music. Hostile and mutated creatures, created and controlled by the delightfully villainous Shodan, await players as they make their way through Citadel Station. Players will also encounter traps, puzzles, and secrets in their pursuit of escape. A combination of stealth, cunning, and futuristic weaponry is required to survive.

During development, Nightdive Studios collaborated closely with many original System Shock team members, including Terri Brosius, the original voice of one of gaming’s most iconic villains: Shodan. Players can expect an array of features in the Switch 2 and Switch ports of System Shock, including Joy-Con 2 mouse support, gyro aiming, various community-requested features, and 1080p at 60 frames per second.

Unravel the chilling story of Shodan’s rise and explore the mysteries of Citadel Station. Piece together the truth in this atmospheric science fiction world. Face perilous traps, puzzles, and a legion of hostile, mutated creatures created and controlled by the villainous Shodan. Players can choose a male or female Hacker protagonist. Improved gyro aiming and Joy-Con 2 mouse support add versatility to the gameplay experience for both controller and mouse-and-keyboard players.

“The Switch port of System Shock is shaping up to be an ‘impossible port.’ It’s running smoothly and looking quite good. It could be considered alongside DOOM (2016), Wolfenstein, and The Witcher 3 as one of the Switch’s ‘impossible ports.’ We believe that fans will be pleased with the performance and platform-specific functionality that we have delivered with these ports of System Shock for Nintendo consoles. Our goal at Nightdive was to deliver a System Shock port that rivals technical feats like DOOM (2016) and The Witcher 3 on the Nintendo Switch. To achieve that, we retained deferred rendering to maintain our dynamic lighting, a significant challenge with this hardware. We are incredibly proud of the result and hope fans agree that we’ve earned a spot among those ‘impossible ports,’” said Justin Khan, producer at Nightdive Studios, in a press release.

The System Shock Remake will be released on December 18 for the Nintendo Switch 2 and the Nintendo Switch.
