Despite receiving more than 200,000 wishlist entries, Valve’s platform rules prevented its release on Steam.
Originally scheduled for release on Steam on December 16, BrownDust 2 was shut down less than two weeks before its release date. According to Gamf’s N and Neowiz, the release of the adult gacha game was canceled due to incompatibility with Steam’s guidelines. This issue cannot be reasonably resolved with the current version of the game.
“We had been preparing for a Steam launch for a long time. However, during the coordination process, we encountered an issue that cannot be reasonably resolved with the current version of the game. After extensive internal discussion, we have decided not to proceed with a Steam release. We considered multiple options to make the release possible, but to preserve the game’s core direction and overall quality, we concluded that making the necessary adjustments at this time would be inappropriate,” wrote the Korean studios in a message posted on the BrownDust 2 website.
The basic premise isn’t particularly pornographic, but it’s definitely not suitable for the workplace (i.e., NSFW). The athletic theme of one of the trailers may explain why this game can’t be on Steam, despite Steam’s acceptance of adult-oriented games. Gameforge and Neowiz have not detailed the exact nature of the problem, but speculation on the Brown Dust 2 subreddit suggests that the reason for Valve’s decision may be the very young-looking characters in the game, which does seem possible. While most of the characters in BrownDust 2 resemble traditional anime characters, one or two look uncomfortably young, particularly Refithea. One Reddit user pointed out that one character in the game is 10 years old, depending on the skin used.

Why they gotta give ages to these characters that are so low

It’s understandable that Valve would be sensitive to this type of content in its store, especially following the recent payment processor controversy. There are plenty of games with sexual content on Steam featuring cartoon characters of indeterminate (but clearly young) age. BrownDust 2 has been available on mobile for years, even though adult content is regulated much more strictly there than on Steam.

The political confusion surrounding this decision is evident, as it was made at the last minute, similar to the recent decision to ban the psychological horror game Horses from Steam. As recently as December 4, BrownDust 2‘s release on Steam was announced on Twitter, and many people were eagerly awaiting it. Despite the game not appearing on Valve’s platform, players will receive the milestone rewards promised by the developer for adding the game to their Steam wish lists after the December 16 update.
The team is looking for alternative PC platforms that would provide a better environment for BrownDust 2. They will provide more details as soon as things are clarified.
