The long-running Bethesda RPG has marched onto the Nintendo Switch 2 with a refreshed Anniversary Edition, but instead of celebration, many users are reporting serious issues. While the update sharpens visuals and adds a few modern touches, widespread complaints about heavy input lag and a stubborn 30 FPS cap are taking over the conversation.
Fourteen years after its original debut, Skyrim is back in the spotlight thanks to its surprise arrival on Nintendo’s next-gen hybrid. Owners of the first Switch version received the upgrade for free, and the package includes new extras inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The community initially welcomed the announcement with jokes and excitement about Tamriel’s latest return, but those good vibes shifted quickly as reports of technical problems began to flood social media.
Although the performance issues do not affect every user, the ones experiencing them describe the situation as shockingly poor. Reddit threads are filling up with warnings: “The graphics are barely better, the framerate is still locked at 30 FPS, and there’s a full second of delay after every input”, writes Dr_Moustachio. “Bethesda has never been great at optimization, but this is ridiculously bad. Honestly, I’d rather play the Switch 1 version, at least that one didn’t feel like wading through mud.”
Some go even further, advising others not to purchase the game in its current state. “There were posts about it, so I tested it myself, and yeah, the game is basically unplayable right now,” reports No-Performance8168. “The input lag is awful. I tested handheld mode and the Pro Controller 2, and the delay is obvious everywhere. If you already own the Anniversary Edition, try it since it’s free, but if you were waiting to buy a Switch 2 version, DO NOT BUY IT RIGHT NOW, IT’S COMPLETELY BROKEN.”
Bethesda has not yet commented on the complaints, leaving users to troubleshoot what they can. One workaround shared by player Whiteguy1x offers slight relief: “Skyrim on Switch 2 has a faulty setting enabled by default. Turn off gesture attacks in the options, and it should behave normally. Posting this because a lot of people seem to have the same issue. I had it too until I found a helpful comment.”
New features available in the Switch 2 version
Despite the criticism, not everyone is having a bad experience. Some players praise the sharper resolution, faster loading times and full Joy-Con 2 compatibility, including the controllers’ mouse-style input option.
The Switch 2 edition also includes Nintendo-exclusive items inspired by Breath of the Wild, such as the Master Sword, the Hylian Shield and the Champion’s Tunic for your Dragonborn. Amiibo support also returns intact.
