HANDHELD NEWS – The Redmond-based tech giant is doubling down on pushing Windows 11 and its countless AI features onto every possible device. Microsoft has now outlined what’s new and what’s coming next, promising that upcoming updates will significantly improve the gaming experience on desktops, laptops, and handheld PCs alike.
Microsoft unveiled the new and upcoming features of Windows 11, as well as what gamers can expect in future updates. Significant improvements are in store for PC gamers, regardless of whether they use a desktop, laptop, or handheld device. Microsoft has developed new features, including improved ray tracing performance, Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE) for handhelds, Auto SR (Super Resolution), and Advanced Shader Delivery support. Major GPU manufacturers want to integrate these features into their future platforms. Intel supports distributing pre-compiled shaders to reduce stuttering and shorten load times. DXR 1.2 improvements pave the way for neural rendering support. This will be the next big step in graphics innovation because all the latest GPU architectures support it, including Nvidia Blackwell and AMD’s next-generation RDNA architecture.
Future Windows 11 updates will make Xbox FSE mode available on more Windows devices, not just handhelds. Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) will also be available on more hardware and in more stores, such as Steam. Support for AutoSR (Super Resolution) will extend to AMD Ryzen AI APUs, such as the one in the ROG Xbox Ally X. Further updates are expected to optimize the performance of PCs and handhelds running Windows 11.
FSE began with handheld devices, but has since expanded to include more Windows devices. A preview is currently available, and Windows and Xbox Insiders can try it out on Windows 11 PCs, including desktops, laptops, and 2-in-1 devices. The user interface offers controller-based navigation, intuitive game launching, and minimal distractions. It is a full-screen, game-centric environment where players can easily browse and launch games from their libraries, including those from the most popular PC stores.
ASD preloads game shaders during download, so certain games launch faster, run more smoothly, and consume less battery power during the first play session. ASD support is continuously expanding to include more games for ROG, Xbox Ally, and Ally X. Early integration work has also begun to support additional hardware and stores. Auto SR is an operating system-level, AI-based upscaling feature that provides sharper images and smoother frame rates in DirectX games running at lower resolutions, eliminating the need for developers to take action. Auto SR first appeared on Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon X processors. A public preview version will be released in early 2026 for the ROG Ally X, which runs on AMD’s Ryzen AI NPU.
