Is Helldivers 2 Going to Get a Roguelite Mode in the Future?

The founder of Arrowhead Game Studios announced this casually, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Helldivers 2 is a deep, immersive cooperative shooter with plenty to do, but we could use some additional modes to shake up its mission-based structure. According to Johan Pilestedt, the founder of Arrowhead, a new mode is currently being developed for Helldivers 2. He responded on Twitter to someone who suggested an endless mode, saying that they have a prototype for a roguelite mode that fundamentally changes the game. He responded so casually that it seemed as if he weren’t revealing the biggest change to Helldivers 2 since its release.

Many fans of the game are probably curious about what an endless mode in Helldivers 2 would be like. It would probably resemble the Horde modes in Gears of War or the Firefight mode in Halo, although, based on Pilestedt’s reference to roguelite, we can infer that the prototype includes modifiers or power-ups. What if the roguelite mode required you to purchase stratagems instead of equipping five? What if you could call down entire defensive structures from the mothership?

Even better than roguelite mode is the news that Arrowhead is thinking outside the box when it comes to future Helldivers 2 updates. The base game is fantastic, and the foundations of Helldivers are solid enough to support exploring other cooperative genres.

However, there is a catch. We should not expect to see the results of these discoveries in any form in the near future. Previous leaks have shown us that Arrowhead likes to try out lots of ideas and then postpone them for later. For example, whatever happened to that armored APC? This roguelite project could take years to show up on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.

By then, it wouldn’t be surprising if next-gen consoles, such as the PlayStation 6 and the successor to the Xbox Series, were already in stores.
