Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: Did the Cut Content’s DLC Fail Due to Legal Issues?

Aspyr had planned to expand the re-release of the game to include the originally cut content, but ultimately, this did not happen.

The company announced that it could not fulfill its promise to release the Restored Content DLC for the Nintendo Switch version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 (KotOR 2) because it could not provide Disney with a complete list of modders. According to Game File, Aspyr had planned to release the Restored Content DLC, which includes the contents of an ambitious mod created by volunteers for PC users, when the game was released in June 2022. Initially, Disney approved of Aspyr’s collaboration with the modding community, provided the community could prove it had all the necessary rights.

However, when KotOR 2 was released without the promised content, Aspyr first claimed that it would be released soon. Then, in June 2023, Aspyr finally admitted that the DLC would not be released. This caused significant frustration among players, and Aspyr was sued for false advertising. The lawsuit revealed correspondence between Aspyr, Lucasfilm, and the modders. It showed that Disney was unwilling to use the players’ real names instead of their nicknames. Despite contacting the modding team, Aspyr was unable to obtain permission from all 22 people involved in the project. Without this permission, Lucasfilm refused to proceed.

One of Aspyr’s executives told two members of the modding team that their desire to credit everyone who contributed to the mod had attracted the attention of Disney’s legal department and resulted in a new block. Shortly thereafter, Aspyr informed fans that it would not continue with the project after a third party (currently believed to be lawyers representing Disney or Lucasfilm Games) raised objections.

Last month, the players, Aspyr, and Lucasfilm Games’ lawyers reportedly reached an out-of-court settlement.
