A short clip was enough to spark a massive debate over whether this game was even real. The viral success of Unrecord eventually caught the attention of one of the biggest companies in the industry, with Tencent now officially stepping in to fund the project.

In 2023, several games made waves by embracing a bold idea: hyperrealism combined with a bodycam-style perspective, similar to footage recorded by law enforcement cameras. From this concept emerged Unrecord, an independent shooter that leveraged Unreal Engine 5 to blur the line between a technical showcase and a fully playable video game.

The project quickly exploded beyond the indie scene. A two-minute trailer racked up nearly 40 million views in less than 24 hours, triggering widespread debate over whether the visuals were actually playable and how its realistic depiction of violence should be approached.

It is now clear that Unrecord is far more than a visual trick. Tencent has officially confirmed that it is providing substantial financial backing to Drama Studios, giving the project the resources it previously lacked.

Faster Development Without Creative Compromise

After the initial viral success, Drama Studios continued working quietly to turn the tech demo into a full game. According to CEO Theo Hiribarne, Unrecord is already in production as a single-player first-person shooter built around hyperrealism and immersion.

“Back in 2023, we were just two people working from our bedrooms with no industry experience. The game was barely six months old and exceeded all our expectations”, Hiribarne explained. Since then, the team has grown to ten developers and is still expanding.

Tencent’s investment allows development to accelerate while leaving the creative vision intact. Hiribarne emphasized that future updates planned for 2026 will better reflect the team’s true ambitions.

Tencent executive Mark Maslowicz added that the company has full confidence in Drama Studios’ creative talent, viewing Unrecord as the foundation for future collaborations.
