Hope After the End of the World: Gerard Butler Returns in Greenland 2: Migration [VIDEO]

MOVIE NEWS – A new trailer has dropped for Gerard Butler’s post-apocalyptic action sequel, set to arrive in theaters in early 2026. Greenland 2: Migration promises large-scale survival thrills, emotional stakes, and a bold new chapter for the Garrity family in a devastated world.

Hope becomes dangerous, uncharted territory in the new trailer for Greenland 2: Migration, the long-awaited sequel to Gerard Butler’s disaster hit. Scheduled for a theatrical release on January 9, 2026, the film sees Butler reprise his role as John Garrity, alongside Morena Baccarin, who once again plays his wife, Allison.

Set five years after the events of the first movie, the sequel finds the Garrity family forced to abandon the safety of the bunker that has protected them since a comet devastated much of the planet. With no choice but to search for a new home, they venture across the ruined landscapes of Europe, encountering relentless threats that push their physical and emotional limits. Judging by the footage, the film is shaping up to be a high-intensity action thriller designed to kick off the new year with impact.

The cast has expanded as well, with Roman Griffin Davis stepping in as the Garritys’ son, replacing Roger Dale Floyd. He is joined by Amber Rose Revah, Gordon Alexander, Peter Polycarpou, William Abadie, and Tommie Earl Jenkins. Greenland 2: Migration arrives six years after the original film, which suffered significant setbacks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Originally intended for a traditional theatrical release, Greenland saw its North American debut delayed multiple times before ultimately skipping theaters altogether and heading straight to digital platforms. Despite the rocky rollout, the film became a surprise hit among viewers willing to take a chance on the apocalyptic thriller, gaining even more traction when it later landed on HBO Max and Prime Video. That success paved the way for the sequel, which was officially announced in June 2021.

Production, however, did not fully get underway until 2024, following the disruptions caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The official synopsis states that five years after the Clarke interstellar comet wiped out most of Earth, the Garrity family must leave the Greenland bunker and embark on a perilous journey across the European wasteland in search of a new place to survive.

Will There Be a Greenland 3?

Holding a Certified Fresh 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Greenland has earned a reputation as one of the strongest post-apocalyptic films of the past decade. While not without flaws, it has become a highly rewatchable crowd-pleaser with genuine heart, fueling high expectations for the sequel.

Unsurprisingly, talk of a third installment has already begun, provided Greenland 2: Migration performs well both in theaters and on VOD. Speaking to Deadline last year, producer Sébastien Raybaud revealed that one key development in the sequel could complicate plans for a third film, though the team is actively working through potential solutions. According to Raybaud, filming wrapped in July 2024, and an early cut left him confident in the achievement, calling the $90 million production exactly the kind of large-scale European filmmaking he hopes to see more of.

For now, audiences can look forward to Greenland 2: Migration hitting theaters on January 9, 2026, from Lionsgate.
