The Fallout Series Is Shaping the Future: Todd Howard Reveals Key Details About Fallout 5

The head of Bethesda confirms that the Prime Video show is now part of the official canon and will directly influence the world of the next mainline RPG.

The first episode of Season 2 of the Fallout series has just premiered, and fans are already embracing its return. While viewers will need to wait several weeks for the remaining episodes, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the Prime Video adaptation is more than a standalone project. Instead, it is actively shaping the future of the Fallout franchise, including the long-awaited Fallout 5, which will arrive only after The Elder Scrolls VI.

Fallout 5 and the TV series are connected

In a recent BBC interview, Todd Howard confirmed that Fallout 5 is being developed with the television series firmly in mind. According to the Bethesda boss, the next game will take place in a world where the events of the show have already occurred or are unfolding alongside the player’s story. Bethesda is therefore treating the games and the series as parts of the same official universe, a decision that requires careful planning when shaping future narratives.

“We’re taking it into account”, Howard explained, as reported by Gamespot. This long-term strategy isn’t entirely unexpected, especially since Fallout 76 has already received content inspired by the show, including the introduction of the Ghoul. Howard believes the series has significantly boosted interest across multiple Fallout titles.

He also emphasized how important the show has been in reaching audiences who don’t typically play video games. While some people still feel intimidated by games, the series allows them to experience the world of Fallout in a different way, potentially turning them into fans who may eventually explore the games themselves.

As for what comes next, Howard urged patience. Fallout 5 remains a distant project, although Bethesda is actively working on several fronts. In an interview with IGN, he neither confirmed nor denied the existence of a Fallout 3 Remaster or any new project related to Fallout: New Vegas, whether as a remake, sequel, or remaster. However, he has repeatedly ruled out remaking the classic Fallout games.

“I’ll just say this: it’s the franchise we’re working on the most right now”, Howard concluded.
