Few were surprised when Hideo Kojima once again revealed ideas that sound unlike anything else in the industry. The creator of Death Stranding has spoken about two concepts he would love to explore: a game playable in zero gravity, and another designed to amaze Artificial Intelligence itself.
Hideo Kojima has firmly established himself as one of the most eccentric creative figures in the video game industry. Beyond captivating millions with the Metal Gear and Death Stranding series, he has repeatedly experimented with unconventional concepts, such as a game capable of detecting a player’s breathing. That mindset shows no sign of slowing down, as Kojima has now shared his future ambitions, revealing that he would like to create a title playable in “weightlessness” as well as another that could “delight” Artificial Intelligence.
The head of Kojima Productions discussed these ideas in an interview with Nikkei Xtrend, via GamesRadar+, openly admitting that both concepts are somewhat far-fetched. Unfortunately, he did not go into detail about how a weightlessness-based game might work, and the conversation soon focused entirely on his desire to impress AI. Kojima also shared his thoughts on the current state of the technology and how he believes it may evolve in the coming years.
At its core, Kojima describes the idea behind Metal Gear as “a game that can train AI”. Pointing out that “right now, AI doesn’t know much and I think it needs to study more”, the Japanese creator envisions this hypothetical project as “a game that serves as study material for Artificial Intelligence”. Kojima is convinced that technological progress is unstoppable, stating that “in five or ten years, AI will make its way through many different worlds”. Based on these reflections, he would like AI to benefit from his ideas surrounding gameplay systems, narrative structure, character design, and other creative elements.
According to Kojima, AI Is Here to Stay
Artificial Intelligence and its applications both inside and outside the video game industry are topics Kojima has addressed in numerous interviews. The creator of Death Stranding has previously spoken in favor of AI’s potential to handle repetitive or tedious tasks, provided that creative decisions remain in the hands of human teams. At the same time, he has expressed concern about how rapidly the technology is spreading into everyday life. “I don’t deny the technology, but for example, the AI on my smartphone presents me with all kinds of things. I don’t like that either. I’m worried that by being too connected online, we’re unknowingly being led toward a predetermined lifestyle”, he commented at the time.
In his interview with Nikkei Xtrend, Kojima offered a slightly different perspective, focusing on how AI becomes standardized within society. “When smartphones were first released, everyone criticized them harshly”, he recalled. “Now there are many people who can’t live without them. That’s how AI is. It’s important to use technology in a way that makes us happy, while also thinking carefully about the direction it should take.”
