Once described as the open-world Viking answer to God of War, Viking: Battle for Asgard is now available for less than four euros. Featuring massive battles with up to a thousand soldiers, the game can currently be picked up for just €3.74 during the Steam Winter Sale.
When Creative Assembly comes up in conversation, most players immediately think of the Total War strategy series. That association is hardly surprising, as the British studio built its reputation on defining the genre. Still, the developers occasionally ventured far beyond strategy, delivering unexpected projects that managed to surprise both longtime fans and newcomers. One such experiment arrived in 2008, transporting players to Viking-era Scandinavia with an unusual twist for Creative Assembly at the time: Viking: Battle for Asgard, an open-world fantasy hack-and-slash action game.
As mentioned, Viking: Battle for Asgard is currently one of the many titles discounted as part of Valve’s Steam Winter Sale. The game is available for just €3.74, includes Spanish voice acting, supports both keyboard-and-mouse and controller setups, and comes in its most complete version. The offer is time-limited, however, and will expire on January 5 at 7:00 PM.
A Viking Open World Filled with God of War DNA
Developed by Creative Assembly, Viking: Battle for Asgard originally launched in 2008, with the PC version following in 2012. The project was born from the studio’s desire to explore new territory beyond strategy, particularly after the positive reception of Spartan: Total Warrior four years earlier. That earlier adventure inspired the idea of adapting the studio’s physics and AI systems to support large-scale battles within a single-player action framework.
Players step into the role of Skarin, a Viking warrior chosen to lead humanity’s resistance against the forces of Hel, the goddess of death. The concept clearly aimed to tap into the popularity of God of War, but instead of ancient Greece, it embraced a darker, more hostile Norse mythology populated by gods with little compassion for mortals, shaping an epic dark fantasy narrative.
One of the game’s strengths lies in how it distanced itself from Spartan: Total Warrior by emphasizing more individual-focused combat. While that earlier PS2, Xbox, and GameCube title relied heavily on large area-of-effect attacks to push back waves of enemies, Viking favored executions and combo-based encounters, making it far more dangerous to fight when surrounded.
That said, Creative Assembly never abandoned its fascination with massive warfare. The open world is packed with settlements to capture, and enormous armies can be seen marching across the map, foreshadowing the large-scale battles that unfold after completing several main story missions.
Despite its age and some mechanics that feel simpler by today’s standards, Viking: Battle for Asgard remains a genuinely fun experience. The Steam Winter Sale offers an excellent opportunity to revisit this cult classic or discover its Viking world for the first time without spending much.
