Could CD Projekt RED (CDPR) be planning to connect the veteran third installment of the series with the still-in-development The Witcher IV?
Despite being released more than 10 years ago, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt remains hugely popular thanks to its compelling story, memorable characters, immersive world, and engaging gameplay. A next-gen update arrived on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, bringing new features and ray tracing support to the PC version. Since then, however, updates and new content have become increasingly rare, though something new may be in the works that could bring players back to the Continent next year.
According to a report from the Polish publication Strefa Inwestorów, Mateusz Chrzanowski, an analyst at Noble Securities, predicts that a major DLC expansion for The Witcher 3 will be released in May 2026, marking the game’s 11th anniversary. The expansion is expected to cost $30 and will reportedly kick off the marketing cycle for The Witcher IV, the next installment in the franchise, which the company plans to release at the end of 2027. If this turns out to be true, the rumored expansion could bridge the gap between the two games and shed more light on how Ciri began her new journey as a Witcher.
While the idea of releasing a major expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt more than a decade after its original launch may seem unlikely to many, this is not the first time such rumors have surfaced. Back in June, well-known Polish gaming industry commentator Borys Nieśpielak revealed that Fool’s Theory, a studio made up of veterans of the series and currently working on a remake of the first installment, is reportedly developing an additional story DLC for the game. This is said to be one of the new projects that CDPR has yet to officially announce.
That said, if The Witcher IV is indeed scheduled for release at the end of 2027, it is entirely possible that it is already being developed with PlayStation 6 and the next-generation Xbox in mind.
