After more than a week of daily free games, Epic Games had already set expectations high this Christmas. Even so, the company behind Fortnite has managed to raise the stakes once again by giving away Disco Elysium: The Final Cut. This surprise release stands out as one of the strongest entries in the store’s holiday campaign so far, reinforcing a familiar trend: the closer we get to the end of the year, the bigger and better the free games become.

Disco Elysium is a detective-focused RPG that distinguishes itself through its writing and the freedom it grants players. There is no traditional combat system here; instead, progress is driven by dialogue choices, internal monologues, and character development. The developers have long described the game as an attempt to capture the purest form of tabletop role-playing in video game form, and the result is a deeply reactive narrative. Both the main storyline and the numerous side quests branch in countless ways, offering radically different outcomes depending on the player’s decisions.

Upon its original release in 2019, the game was met with overwhelming critical acclaim and became the most awarded title at that year’s The Game Awards.
