It is not yet known whether Commander Shepard will appear in BioWare’s next game, but the two actors would be happy to reprise their roles.
Not much is known yet about the next Mass Effect game being developed by BioWare. The situation is uncertain given the layoffs and Electronic Arts’ sale to Saudi Arabia. However, thanks to Fall Damage’s YouTube interview with Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale, who play Commander Shepard, one thing is certain: they would both love to return to the role. After discussing whether Shepard is still alive after the events of Mass Effect, Hale encouraged fans to email the developers and tell them that they want more Shepard because she and Meer are ready for the task. She would be happy to take on the role again if she and Meer were asked to reprise their roles as Shepard. Meer agrees, but only under certain conditions.
BioWare killed Shepard at the beginning of Mass Effect 2, insisting it was final, but then brought him back with the Lazarus Project to save everyone from the Reaper threat. If it happened once, it could happen again. However, bringing Shepard back for a new adventure might diminish the original trilogy. After the turmoil of Mass Effect: Andromeda and the underwhelming performance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, returning to the familiar world of trusted heroes might be the best next step. What little BioWare has revealed about the next Mass Effect game relies on familiar elements, including Liara T’Soni digging up a broken piece of metal with the N7 logo on it. That was five years ago, and things may have changed, but that’s all we have to go on for now.
But if Shepard doesn’t return in the next Mass Effect game, that’s okay. According to Meer, narratives sometimes come to an end. He’s satisfied with the ending, considering that, chronologically, the last thing they did was the Citadel DLC. He believes that it solved people’s problems, especially in terms of closure. Hale said the Citadel DLC was a lot of fun. It was a love letter from BioWare to the entire community, and it was Meer’s favorite DLC.
Whatever lies ahead for Mass Effect will no longer be under the direction of former project director Casey Hudson, who is currently working on Star Wars: The Old Republic.
