Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: A Next-Gen Mod Is In the Works for the New Engine! [VIDEO]

As CJ would say at the beginning of the game, “Ah, sh*t, here we go again.”

With Grand Theft Auto VI still almost a year away, fans of Rockstar Games‘ IP must play older installments of the series or Grand Theft Auto Online to satisfy their cravings. While most of the older games have held up well, some are starting to show their age. This has prompted fans to look for new ways to enjoy these timeless classics, such as improved graphics and gameplay, in addition to official remasters. One example is an upcoming mod project that brings the classic Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas experience to the latest version of the game’s engine.

The Revolution Team, the modding group behind the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Nextgen Edition project, has unveiled Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — The Nextgen Edition. This mod transforms Grand Theft Auto V and brings the entire game, originally released on the PlayStation 2, to the latest version of the Rage engine. This means that all content, from main missions to side missions, will be playable in Grand Theft Auto V.

Currently, very little information is available, and for good reason. The team will likely be more cautious about sharing details this time around to avoid a repeat of what happened with their Vice City project. Earlier this year, Take-Two Interactive subjected the project to significant legal pressure and takedowns on social media, ultimately leading the team to release the mod as a standalone package to ensure its survival. Thanks to this development, however, exciting times are sure to await fans of the series.

The question now is whether Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — The Nextgen Edition will be released before Grand Theft Auto VI. Revolution Team has not commented on this, but one thing is certain: 2026 promises to be a great year for fans of the series.
